Restaurant Week announced! A challenge is on

A-Williams-17Basseterre, St. Kitts, 19th April, 2017 (MyVueNews.com) - The third annual St. Kitts and Nevis Restaurant Week was launched Tuesday, 18th April, with the focus on the preparation and presentation of the local yam.

 

At a Media Launch held at the conference room of the Department of Agriculture, official of tourism and agriculture promoted the event, which they say is important in the process of changing attitudes about buying local foods, as against imported foods.

 

In the past, the breadfruit and the sweet potato have been featured.

 

Restaurant Week 2017 will be held July 19 to 30. 

 

Over that period, participating restaurants will offer special restaurant week menu at one of three price points. From the high-end restaurants to tasty delights of our street vendors, all registered entities will be providing something special during restaurant week.

 

Tourism Events Unit Executive Director Allister Williams some of the importance of the event. 

 

He said, ““Restaurant Week is a chance for locals and visitors alike to take advantage of very special menu prices that they do not normally see, and to make dining out even more attractive, exciting for locals and for visitors to our shores.”

 

He continued, “All Restaurant Week venders will emphasize local ingredients and authentic Kittitian and Nevisian cuisine. And, of course, most of them will be creating special dishes using the theme ingredient, for this year, which is local yam.”

 

Other events and promotions will also take place leading up to and during Restaurant Week, Williams said.

 

The Media Launch (including an exhibit of agro-processors) on Tuesday was one such event, and others will be unfolded, as the main event draws nearer.

 

Williams invited persons to register and enter the Restaurant Week Yam Challenge.

 

He said, “It is a federation-wide cooking competition for the best yam dish for St. Kitts and Nevis. We want everyone to know that anyone can enter.”

 

Categories include the entree or appetizer, a dessert, or a drink made from yam.

 

He said participants do not need to be professional chefs.

 

“In fact,” Williams said, “Past winners have been citizens for whom cooking was just a hobby.”

 

He informed that persons can register at the Ministry of Tourism or at the Department of Agriculture.

 

The first round of judging will take place on Saturday, 13th May. the winner of the appetizer, entree category will be determined by a live cook-off on Saturday, 17th June. The winning appetizer/entree will be featured on dinner menus in restaurants through out the federation during Restaurant Week.

 

In addition, all category participants will vie for a range of exciting prizes.
