Hollywood is new Culturama Calypso King

Hollywood-WinnerBasseterre, Sunday, 6th August, 2017 ( - Victory could not have come at a better time for the new Calypso Monarch of Nevis, Hollywood.

The Nevisian calypsonian is currently celebrating 25 years in the art-form, having made his debut in 1992.

He could not have asked for a better Silver Anniversary gift than winning the 2017 Culturama Calypso Competition at the Cultural Complex in Charlestown, on Saturday night, 5th August.

Along his road to victory, Hollywood defeated former kings Did N Dat, who entered as the reigning monarch, and Astro.

His victory once again helped to maintain a rather unusual record in the calypso arena, where no Nevisian, in 43 years, has ever successfully defended and secured the crown in consecutive attempts.

With a massive 830 points, Hollywood out did his First Runner-up, Daddy Nature, on 811 points and the Second Runner-up, Charis D, with 792 points.

There was no place found for the former kings Astro and Dis n Dat.

Earlier in the day, thousands turned out at Pinney’s Beach to support the annual Food, Arts & Craft Fair.

The festival continues on Sunday night with the Miss Culture Pageant, featuring five contestants.

The much awaited J’ouvert session is slated for Monday morning, (7th August), followed later in the night with the Miss Caribbean Culture Pageant.
