Merlene Ottey Making a Comeback

At age 50, Merlene Ottey is eying a return to competitive athletic action at the 2010 European Championships. Ottey who is a three time World Champion, would become the oldest athlete to ever participate in the competition.

In 2002, Ottey relinquished her Jamaican athletic ties when she became a naturalized citizen of Slovania, after striking a deal to represent that nation, on the international circuit. Before her move however, she had already won nine (9) medals in seven games for her native Jamaica.

Ottey was one of five women recently selected for Slovania’s female 4x100m relay squad, expected to take part in the European games, scheduled for Barcelona, Spain, on July 31st. She placed second in the Slovanian qualifiers and is therefore most likely to gain the nod for the final team.

The only person older than Ottey who has participated in the European Championships, was Nicole Brakebusch-Leveque, of France, at age 47.

Ottey would be hoping that her impressive record and experience would provide her with the required edge to deliver an outstanding performance at the 2010 games.

She has won 29 medals at major championships, more than any other athlete. At 35, she won the 200m in the World Championships, becoming the oldest gold medalist at the event.
